BAW Yuanbao

2026-09-29 05:10:00

The Yuanbao is an all-electric microcar by Beijing Automobile Works (BAW), officially launched on 28 June 2022 in conjunction with the company's 71st anniversary. Positioned as an urban runabout, the 3-door, 4-seater micro-EV focuses on nimble handling, value for money, and youthful styling. The 2023 Yuanbao is offered in three CLTC pure electric range options—120 km, 170 km, and 220 km—across a 7-variant line-up, with official retail prices ranging from RM29,700 to RM48,800. As a core offering in BAW's A00-segment EV line-up under its "New Track" strategy, the Yuanbao forms the brand's micro-EV range alongside the Jiabao and Yuanbao Plus.

Design Language

The Yuanbao features a compact, boxy silhouette with an approachable, playful aesthetic and strong road presence. Up front, it sports a closed-off grille flanked by rounded rectangular headlamps, featuring LED units on earlier models and halogen on selected 2023 lower-spec variants, with the BAW script badging positioned on the central front panel. The lower front bumper integrates a mesh intake complemented by smoked black and chrome accents on the front lip. In profile, the 2-door body rides on 13-inch wheels wrapped in 155/65 R13 tyres. Dimension-wise, it measures 3,162 mm in length, 1,498 mm in width, and 1,585 mm in height, with a 2,050 mm wheelbase, a laden ground clearance of 135 mm, and a turning radius of just 4.25 metres. At the rear, polygonal 3D tail lamp clusters are paired with a widened bumper finished in extensive smoked black trim, echoing the front styling. Inside, the 2022 models and 2023 higher-spec variants (Jingying / Lingxian / Zungui) are equipped with a dual-screen layout (dual 10.25-inch or dual 7-inch displays), a two-spoke multi-function steering wheel, and a rotary gear selector; meanwhile, 2023 entry-level trims (Xindong / Qingsong / Shushi / Chaoyue) feature a revised steering wheel and a standalone digital instrument cluster, omitting the twin-screen design.

Powertrain & Performance

The Yuanbao is powered by a rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous electric motor available in two output tunes:

  • Low-output version (fitted to Xindong / Qingsong / Shushi / Jingying / Lingxian trims): delivers a maximum output of 20 kW (27 PS) and 85 Nm of torque;

  • High-output version (fitted to Chaoyue / Zungui trims): delivers a maximum output of 25 kW (34 PS) and 100 Nm of torque.

All variants are paired with a single-speed EV transmission sending drive to the rear wheels, achieving a top speed of 100 km/h. Energy is supplied by a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack with cells from Jiangxi Ganfeng, available in three capacities—9.6 kWh, 13.6 kWh, and 17.28 kWh—delivering CLTC-rated pure electric ranges of 120 km, 170 km, and 220 km, respectively. The car supports AC slow charging only, taking 6.5 hours for a full charge on the 170 km variant; the battery pack features low-temperature preheating, and the first owner enjoys an 8-year or 120,000 km battery warranty.

Chassis & Handling

Underpinning the car is a rear-motor, rear-wheel-drive (RWD) architecture featuring MacPherson strut independent front suspension and a multi-link (or 3-link) non-independent rear axle. Braking is handled by solid front discs and rear drum brakes, alongside a conventional mechanical handbrake. Steering is assisted by an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system on a monocoque body. Drivers can toggle between Sport and Eco drive modes, with regenerative braking and Hill Start Assist fitted as standard. While the chassis is tuned primarily for low-speed urban commutes, consumer complaints on automotive platform CheZhiWang note recurring issues with rear axle suspension build quality and severe underbody rust.

Cabin & Equipment

The cabin layout varies across the range: 2023 higher-spec trims (Jingying / Lingxian / Zungui) boast a dual-screen setup combining a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen; lower-spec trims (Xindong / Qingsong / Shushi / Chaoyue) utilise a standalone digital instrument cluster, with BAW offering a complimentary standalone centre display and reverse camera without time limit. The infotainment system supports Bluetooth connectivity and voice command, while range-topping variants gain a 360-degree around-view monitor. Seats are upholstered in fabric or synthetic leather depending on variant, with manual adjustment only (fore/aft and backrest angle), and the rear bench folds down as a single unit to expand boot space. Standard convenience amenities include manual air-conditioning, front and rear power windows, 2 speakers, and USB/Type-C ports. Gear shifts are operated via an electronic rotary dial, complemented by a remote key fob and central locking.

Safety & Driver Assistance

Standard safety kit across the Yuanbao range includes Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA/EBA), Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS warning), and ISOFIX child seat anchors. In terms of passive safety, front driver and passenger airbags are omitted on certain lower variants (subject to specific trim configuration), while side and curtain airbags are not available across the range. For parking aids, a reverse camera comes standard (bundled free on base trims), while higher trims add a 360-degree camera system with front and rear parking sensors. Active safety is limited to an Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) for low speeds; advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) like Lane Departure Warning, Autonomous Emergency Braking, and Blind Spot Monitoring are not offered. As such, autonomous driving capability stands at Level 0. Notably, CheZhiWang complaint records highlight recurring issues such as EPS failure, battery abnormalities after charging, 12V auxiliary battery drainage, air-con compressor failure, and severe chassis rusting.

Market Performance & Evaluation

Priced between RM29,700 and RM48,800, the Yuanbao targets the entry-level pure electric micro-EV segment, competing directly against the Wuling Hongguang MINIEV, Chery QQ Ice Cream, and Changan Lumin. At its initial 2022 debut, four trims were offered (Lemeng, Baomeng, Yuemeng, and Zhimeng) priced from RM33,900 to RM49,900, with 120 km and 170 km range options. In September 2023, BAW rolled out an updated model year, adding a 220 km long-range variant, expanding the line-up to 7 options, and lowering the entry price to RM29,700. The Yuanbao’s key selling point lies in its rear-motor, rear-wheel-drive layout and multi-link rear suspension—offering theoretically superior stability over the rigid axle setups in certain rivals. However, CheZhiWang complaint data indicates concentrated quality control concerns, with frequent user reports of severe underbody corrosion, EPS malfunction, rapid battery discharge, and poor after-sales service. While specific complaint-to-sales ratios and sales figures for the 2023 model have not been disclosed, the volume of reported defects reflects clear shortcomings in build consistency. Overall, while the BAW Yuanbao delivers an ultra-accessible entry point with compact dimensions and an agile RWD setup, there remains significant room for improvement in build quality, reliability, and brand credibility.
